FAQs

A few answers to questions we often get asked

What is a domain name?

A domain name is basically your address on the Internet. Your domain name will look something like "www.yourdomain.com" and should be as close to your business name as possible. Choosing a domain name that is similar to your business name will prevent any confusion when somebody visits your website or if somebody receives an email from you. Your domain name (www.yourname.com) points to your web hosting provider.

What is web hosting?

A website consists of many files of code and special scripts.  All those website files and scripts have to stored on a computer that is continously connected the internet. Your web hosting company supplies space on their computers to host your files.

Your web hosting cost is basically the amount you pay a web hosting company for the storage of your files and the permanent connection to the internet.

We recommend that you keep your email service hosted separately from your website hosting.

Do you provide web hosting?

Yes - We offer different levels of web hosting depending on the size of your website, the amount of traffic you get and of course, your budget. We only provide hosting to our website design and website care plan clients. In other words, we need to know your website before we can offer you hosting.

How much will a website cost?

If only we got a penny every time…

Without any information to work with, this is like asking "How much is a car?"  It's an impossible question to answer without some basic information like the manufacturer, the model, the engine size, interior type, etc. The price could range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

Pricing a website is very similar. Without knowing how many pages and posts you need, the quantity and type of images, or any other features you require, it's difficult for us to provide a price.

We can build any type of website and the best way to get a ballpark price is to book a Website Strategy Session. After spending some time with you discussing your website goals, objectives and expectations we'll have a much better idea of the scope and size of your project to give you an estimated budget.

What is a website care plan?

A Website Care Plan is an optional (but highly recommended) service that we offer to all our website clients. Basically, we make sure your website is running smoothly and is protected from hackers and malware attacks while you work on running your business. It's one less thing for you to worry about.

Our Website Care Plans include features like hosting, 24-7 monitoring, daily or weekly backups, security scans, software updates. We also provide content and functionality updates on some of our plans. If you are not one of our website clients but are interested in a Care Plan, please contact us to discuss your options.

Do you provide email service?

We don't offer email services because there are free and low-cost email services that are much better than any service we could provide. We do however have two email service partners that we can recommend based on assessing your email needs.

Can you write the content for my website?

We have professional copy writers who can write content if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. You’ll still have to provide info for your “about us” or “bios” and maybe some specifics about your products or services, but we will polish everything up so your copy shines.

Please understand that if you are writing your own content we can’t wait for it. We’ll build and launch your site even if your content is not ready. You’ll just have a lot of “dummy content” to replace on your pages.

What is a blog?

A blog is a series of articles or news items or pieces of “content” that are posted to your website. We recommend that you have a blog in order to keep the content on your website fresh and relevant.  Google likes for your website to have new content as often as possible. It helps to keep driving traffic.  If you need us to provide blog content we can develop a plan as part of the overall strategy.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is basically software for building and structuring a website. WordPress is a Content Management System or CMS, which is a system for organizing and editing the content without the need for any programming or technical knowledge. One of the benefits of using WordPress for your website is that it enables you to carry out updates and edits of your content without having to pay or wait for someone else to do it.

We use WordPress for the majority of the websites we build because of the built-in features and functionality. It substantially reduces development time which reduces our project hours and ultimately saves you money. WordPress is currently used on over 25% of the websites in the world. Yep, a quarter of all the websites in the world are built with WordPress and that's constantly growing. It’s the best website solution available and that's the main reason we use it.

Do you design logos?

Yes. We have designed logos (and business cards, brochures, etc) for a variety of clients.  We prefer that these items be part of an overall digital marketing strategy and project, but if you need a logo let us know.

Do you provide training?

We include an hour of training as well as a set of training videos and a training manual.  The videos and manual will walk you through the process of updating your own website. We also offer live group training that we can do online or in person. If you interested, please contact us for more information.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

To do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) correctly involves carrying out several tasks on a consistent basis in many different places. From On-Page optimization to link building and other Off-Page tasks, SEO is quite complicated and is extremely time-consuming if you don't know what you are doing.

To get your website to rank high in Google and other search engines involves a lot of work up-front as well as regular work on an ongoing basis if you want to maintain your rankings. There are no magic “set it and forget it” Search Engine Optimization tricks so don't let anyone sell you that type of snake oil.

A good SEO strategy and ongoing plan are a necessity if you want to dominate the search engine results. We offer a full range of SEO services.

Will my site be search engine optimized?

As mentioned above we will do what we can to optimize your website for search engines. This means that we will perform “on-page” activities and will provide good SEO content (if that’s part of the project).

We also recommend at least a minimum optimization plan of some sort on an ongoing basis.  We can discuss that in detail if you wish.

What is On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO?

On-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do ON your website to help you rank higher, such as page titles, internal linking, meta tags & descriptions, page speed, etc.

Off-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do directly OFF your website to help you rank higher, such as link building, citation management, press releases, guest blogging, etc.

What SEO tasks can you do?
